Common Questions

Everything you need to know.

How far in advance should I book?+
We recommend 4–6 weeks ahead for weddings and 2 weeks for smaller events. During peak season (April–October), slots fill quickly — especially for out-of-state travel bookings.
What cloth length do I need?+
Adults need 7.5m (6 layers) or 6.5m (5 layers). Children aged 2–6 need approximately 4m. Sikh Dastars need stitching and washing beforehand; Safa and Pheta styles require no preparation at all.
Do you travel outside Cancun?+
Yes — we travel across all of Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Travel charges are discussed transparently at booking time.
How long does each turban take?+
On average 5–10 minutes per person. For large wedding parties, we bring multiple artisans so everyone is ready on schedule without any compromise in quality.
Do you tie turbans for non-Sikh traditions?+
Absolutely. We specialise in Sikh Dastars but also tie Safa/Pheta for Hindu weddings, Rajasthani-style turbans, and other regional variations. Tell us your specific style and we will confirm we can execute it.

How to Tie a Sikh Dastar (Pagg): A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Tying a Sikh Dastar — also called a pagg or turban — is one of the most meaningful acts in the Sikh tradition. Whether learning for yourself or preparing for a wedding, this guide covers everything.

What You Will Need

  • A pagg cloth — 6.5 to 7.5 metres, washed and stitched at the edges
  • A flat surface or helper to hold the cloth taut
  • A mirror to check symmetry and adjust the front fold

Step 1: Prepare the Cloth

Wash and lightly starch your pagg cloth before beginning. Fold it lengthwise to a width of around 5 to 7 inches depending on the style.

Step 2: Set the Starting Position

Place the centre of the cloth at the back of your head, bringing both ends forward over your shoulders. The starting position determines the final shape.

Step 3: Build the Larhs

Wrap one end across the forehead, pulling taut and angling slightly upward. Each wrap is a larh. A standard Dastar uses 5 to 6 larhs.

Step 4: Secure and Shape

Tuck the remaining cloth at the back. Adjust the front for clean symmetry — a well-tied pagg has a perfectly even front fold with no loose fabric.

For weddings or important events, a professional ensures a flawless result. Turban Tier in Mexico serves Cancun, Tulum, and across Mexico.

Dastar vs Saafa: Which Wedding Pagg Style is Right for Your Big Day?

The two most popular wedding pagg choices are the Sikh Dastar and the Saafa. Both are beautiful — but they carry different traditions and suit different occasions.

The Sikh Dastar

The Dastar is deeply rooted in Sikh tradition. Tied with 6 to 7 metres in multiple tight larhs, it sits high on the head projecting dignity. For Anand Karaj it is not just preferred — it is expected.

  • Best for: Sikh weddings, Anand Karaj, formal ceremonies
  • Fabric: 6.5 to 7.5 metres, washed and stitched
  • Styles: Morni Dastar, Patiala Shahi, Morni Wattan Wali

The Saafa

The Saafa is most common at Hindu and Punjabi weddings. Flexible in colour, it ties lower on the head with a fan-shaped front that photographs beautifully.

  • Best for: Hindu weddings, Punjabi celebrations, photoshoots
  • Fabric: 5 to 6 metres, no stitching required

Tips & Advice

How Many Metres of Fabric Do You Need for a Pagg?

One of the most common questions: how long does my pagg cloth need to be?

Sikh Dastar

  • 5 Larh: 6.5 metres — compact and clean
  • 6 Larh (recommended): 7.5 metres — fuller, ideal for weddings
  • Children aged 2 to 6: 4 metres

Saafa / Pheta

  • 5 to 6 metres depending on fabric thickness
  • No stitching required — use the cloth directly

Preparing Your Pagg Cloth

For Sikh Dastars the cloth must be washed and stitched at the edges before your appointment. For Saafa and Pheta styles no preparation is needed.

Patiala Shahi Dastar: The Royal Pagg Style Every Groom Should Know

The Patiala Shahi Dastar is one of the most striking pagg styles in Punjabi culture. Its wide flat front panel (pankha) and distinctive pleating create a bold, majestic profile.

What Makes It Distinctive

  • Wide, flat front fold (pankha) that fans out elegantly
  • Significant height — commands attention in any room
  • Requires 7.5 metres of pagg cloth for full volume
  • Extremely photogenic — designed for portraits

Tying Time

A well-tied Patiala Shahi pagg takes 20 to 35 minutes. At Turban Tier in Mexico our artisans have tied hundreds of this style efficiently without compromising a single fold.

Culture & Heritage

The Meaning of the Dastar: Why the Pagg is Sacred in Sikh Culture

To a Sikh, the Dastar is far more than fabric. It is a crown of honour and a symbol of the values that define Sikhi.

What the Pagg Represents

The Dastar represents five values: honour, self-respect, courage, spirituality, and piety. Tying it each morning is a daily renewal of commitment to the Guru's teachings.

History

The tradition was formalised by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. He gave the pagg to every Sikh — regardless of caste or class — as a declaration of equal sovereignty and spiritual dignity.

The Dastar Bandi

The first tying of a young Sikh's turban — the Dastar Bandi — is a profound milestone celebrated with great reverence by the entire community.

At Turban Tier in Mexico every pagg we tie carries this weight — one fold at a time.
